I am totally excited to share with you a great and easy-to-make tutorial on how to make your own Sleep mask like the one Holly Golightly wore in “Breakfast at Tiffany’s”. I found this beautiful tutorial which explains step by step how to make a replica of Audrey Hepburn’s sleep mask with little budget!
Let’s try it together! You’re gonna love it!
Example of Tiffany Blue Colored Fabric
What you will need:
- 1 Black Felt (to fill the inside of the mask)
- Light Blue Felt
- Gold Ribbon, Braided
- Gold Fringe Ribbon
- Gold Elastic, Ribbon or Satin (depends on how you want to tie back the mask)
- Tiffany Blue Colored Fabric
- Light Blue Colored Thread
- Tiffany Blue Colored Thread
- 2 Emerald Colored Flat Glass Beads (for the eyes)
- Gold Colored Thread
- 1 White Chalk
IMPORTANT! Please print the template as it is shown in the pdf, DO NOT resize it.
Take the black felt. Put it down on your working table. Put the template above the black felt and trace following the form of the template mask. To trace use a white chalk.
Cut out the felt with scissors, following the template form.
Then, cut out to the form of the mask two light blue felts and two Tiffany Blue fabrics.
IMPORTANT! The two light blue felts must be slightly larger than the black felt and then two felts of Tiffany blue fabrics must be a bit bigger than the light blue felts.
You should have a total of 5 felts: 1 Black Felt, 2 Light Blue Felts and 2 Tiffany Blue fabrics. (See picture below)
Take the Black Felt, put it in the middle of the two Light Blue Felts. Then sew, with the light blue thread, the two pieces of light blue around the black felt.
Make eyebrow-shaped “bumps” out of scraps and attach as shown above. This will serve as the brow bone above the eyelid.
Now we will make the back tie strings for the mask. Take the two sheets of Tiffany blue fabric and put them together with the bad sides facing you. Take the gold ribbon and put it inside the fabric as shown above. The gold ribbon should go long from side to side on the inside of the mask.
Take the two sheets of Tiffany blue fabric and put them together with the bad sides facing you. Take the gold ribbon and put it inside the fabric as shown above, it should pass in the middle of the fabric from side to side, only on the inside of the mask.
Sew the gold ribbon to the length you choose both on the left and on the right side. The sewing should arrive at the upper level of your ear. Please check it before sewing the gold ribbon to make sure it will fit you.
Note: If you prefer to tie back the mask with an elastic , just sew a gold elastic instead inside the mask .
Sew the Tiffany Blue fabric around the edges and bottom, leaving the top seam open. Make sure the string is positioned so that when turned back to the right side, the longer portions will be on the outside.
Put the fabric over the felt mask and sew the top closed. Sew the flat emerald glass beads at an even distance in the middle of the two circles for the eyes. Sew the braided gold ribbon around the frame of the mask using the gold thread. Take your time to do this as this part is well seen once your mask is done!
To make the eyebrows, roll a piece of the gold ribbon into a tube and sew it to make the eyebrows. Repeat for other side trying to distribute the gold ribbon at an even distance from the left eye to the right eye so that the eybrows look even.
Make the eyelids by cutting out an eyelid shape into two pieces of light blue felt (a). Cut two pieces of Tiffany Blue fabric slightly larger than the light blue felt pieces. Sew together as shown in (b) with the two pieces of fabric on the bottom and the felt on top. Turn one piece of the fabric back over. Sew the fringed gold ribbon onto the bottom of the eyelid as seen in (c). Trim the fringe to your desired length and add a piece of the braided gold to the top of the fringe (d).
Congratulations! You just made “Breakfast At Tiffany’s” Sleep Mask by yourself! Enjoy a deserved nap looking gorgeous in your new Holly Golightly hand made sleep mask!!!Audrey Hepburn would be proud of you!I am, too!!!
